A unique stargazing experience in the heart of the city

Bookings are now open for the 2024 stargazing sessions at the Observatory Tower in Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre.

Heritage Stargazing is the result of a partnership between The Arts Centre and the University of Canterbury. The Arts Centre’s rebuilt Observatory Tower plays host to thirty minute tours where participants can experience the remarkable earthquake restoration and glimpse the city lights as they climb the winding staircase to the top. Once in the observatory dome, participants view the night sky through the university’s historic 1864 Townsend Teece Telescope operated by UC’s Townsend Observers. Together the tours offer a unique experience in the city and astronomy past and present.

Heritage Stargazing will operate every clear Friday night until late September when Daylight Saving starts. Organisers are keeping groups small, so everyone gets a chance to have a look through the telescope and navigate the stairs safely. Despite this, the experience will be brief, and many locals will no doubt be keen to return to learn more and see how the night sky changes over time.

The Observatory Tower is not open to the public at any other time, and the historic Townsend Teece Telescope can only be operated by authorised UC personnel. Tours are expected to sell out quickly. If you have a large organised group, please contact the UC team to arrange a private tour.
