What

Off Centre Mākete unites inspired design with quality craftsmanship. Makers and vendors – the heart of Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre and the mākete – are a carefully selected and eclectic range of independent artisans.

Off Centre Mākete will give market-goers a unique shopping experience to remember.

The kind of vendors the mākete is looking for

  • Independent designs, arts, crafts, fresh produce and artisan foods.
  • Art, crafts and products that are eco-friendly or upcycled.
  • Products and items that fit in with the overall vision of the Off Centre Mākete.
  • Overall presentation and a level of professionalism with finished product.

Application tips & information

  • Applications must include clear information about your products. They must include what they are made of, how they are made and clear, consistent imagery that complements your work.
  • One application per person/collective only.
  • The market is curated and applications are chosen based on creating a diverse market.
  • Please add abbiep@artscentre.org.nz to your address book so our emails aren’t caught by your junk mail filter.
  • You must include high-resolution images in your application, preferably in square format for social media. These must not include any overlaid text or logos (please keep each image under 5MB).
  • If selected as a vendor your photo(s) will be used on The Arts Centre’s website and may be used for other promotional purposes.
  • The Off Centre Mākete is a curated market, therefore we cannot accept all vendors. We apologise in advance if we are unable to offer you a stall this time.
  • Stall fees are due prior to the mākete. If we don’t receive your fee you forfeit your spot and are not permitted to sell or trade at the Off Centre Mākete.
  • Applications close Monday 23 January.

Art, craft and vintage stall fees

Canopy: 2.7 metres x 1.85 metres (canopy supplied)

  • Saturday 4 & Sunday 5 - $70 (+ gst)
  • Saturday only - $50 (+ gst)
  • Sunday only - $50 (+ gst)

Food canopy (powered & non-powered) and food truck stall fees

  • Saturday 4 & Sunday 5 - $100 (+ gst) & non-powered $70 (+ gst)
  • Saturday only - $70 (+ gst) & non-powered $50 (+ gst)
  • Sunday only - $70 (+ gst) & non-powered $50 (+ gst)

THE ARTS CENTRE MĀKETE TERMS AND CONDITIONS

These Terms and Conditions apply to all Stallholders who have been offered a stall at the Off Centre Mākete. All Stallholders are required to read these Terms and Conditions and confirm their agreement by completing the tick box at the bottom of the application form.

CANCELLATION

Stallholders may cancel their stall by emailing or calling the Off Centre Mākete coordinator.

Cancellation fees are as follows:

  • Cancellations less than 48 hours out will result in loss of 100% of the stall cost.
  • Prior to this, we will offer a refund minus a $15.00 administration fee.
  • If the event has to be postponed or cancelled due to natural events, such as earthquakes, pandemic or for other reasons beyond the Art Centre Mākete control, the Off Centre Mākete shall be entitled to retain a part of all sums paid by the Stallholders as is considered necessary to cover costs. Stallholders will not be entitled to compensation or penalty in the case of cancellation.

TRADING HOURS

  • Stallholders agree to remain open for the full duration of the mākete.
  • If a Stallholder sells out of product their stall must be left set up until the end of the mākete.
  • All Stallholders must be set up and ready to trade 15 minutes before the commencement of the mākete.

INSURANCE

  • Stallholders are responsible for their own public liability insurance.
  • Food Stallholders must have a current public liability insurance policy.

EQUIPMENT

  • Canopies are supplied by The Arts Centre. All other displays/tables/chairs etc are the responsibility of the Stallholders unless otherwise notified.
  • All stalls and equipment provided by the Mākete remain the property of The Arts Centre.
  • It is the Stallholder’s responsibility to ensure all equipment brought to the mākete has been erected securely, is operated in a safe manner and has been ballasted against strong winds prior to the commencement of trade.
  • Please ensure large displays sitting on tabletops are adequately secured to prevent them from falling off and damaging the floor (clamps can be purchased from The Warehouse or Bunnings).
  • Any electrical equipment used on a stall must be approved by The Arts Centre Management team before use and must have a current electrical safety tag (Mitre 10 offer this service).
  • Any stall using electrical equipment that is not safety tagged will be asked to shut it down. Non-compliance will result in the Stallholder being removed from the mākete.
  • Non-compliant stalls will not have their stall fees refunded.
  • Gas, barbecues and any other heating equipment may be used only at food stalls.
  • Lighting of canopies for night markets is the responsibility of the Stallholders and any electrical lighting must be safety tagged.

SET UP & PACK DOWN TIMES & VEHICLE ACCESS

  • Access times will be emailed out with the set-up information about 5 days before the mākete.
  • Stallholders must unload their vehicles and remove their vehicles as soon as practical and before they begin setting up their stall. After unloading please park vehicles away from car parks directly around the market so as to keep these free for market shoppers.
  • Vehicle speeds shall remain under 5 kilometres an hour at all times when in Market Square/Hereford Street at The Arts Centre.

WEATHER

  • The mākete operates in varying weather conditions.
  • It is the responsibility of the Stallholders to bring their own covers and other equipment for the purpose of protection against adverse weather conditions.

PRODUCTS FOR SALE

  • Stallholders are not permitted to sell offensive, illegal, prohibited, counterfeit or unauthorised goods.
  • Stallholders are not permitted to sell items that are sexist, racist, homophobic, xenophobic or considered generally offensive by Arts Centre management.
  • Stallholders must submit a written request to mākete management if they wish to make changes to the existing approved product line(s) they sell.

TERMINATION

The Arts Centre reserves the right to withhold consent to occupy a stall at its mākete from a Stallholder, or to remove from the mākete a Stallholder who is in breach of, or does not comply with, the Terms and Conditions, including where a Stallholder:

  • Fails to abide by the regulations for set up or pack down.
    OR
  • Behaves in a manner that breaches the mākete code of conduct.

STALLHOLDER OBLIGATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Stallholder agrees that at any time the Stallholder is in the mākete, the Stallholder will:

  • Respond cooperatively to any direction given by mākete staff in relation to the operation and occupation of their stall, equipment, goods, and vehicle during set up and pack out.
  • Comply with the instructions of mākete staff regarding the movement and parking of vehicles in the mākete, on public roads and in the areas within the immediate vicinity of the mākete.
  • Ensure that activities do not endanger the safety or security of any people at the mākete.
  • Leave the site in the same condition in which it was before the stall was set up. If any damage is caused to the site, then costs of making good shall be borne by the Stallholder.
  • Report to mākete staff any incident or accident to any person or property that involves loss or could be expected to give rise to a claim.
  • Not place or affix any product or signage to any permanent building, structure or vegetation.

CODE OF CONDUCT

Stallholders must:

  • Not interfere with public pedestrian access or access to and from adjoining properties.
  • Be considerate towards neighbouring businesses adjoining the mākete.
  • Acknowledge that a stall at the mākete may not be assigned or sublet to any other person and does not convey any right to any particular location for a Stallholder.
  • Not conduct themselves in an abusive, offensive or violent manner.
  • Treat customers, members of the public, other Stallholders and The Arts Centre and mākete staff with respect. If an issue occurs, that issue must be brought to the attention of the mākete team.
  • Abide by the spirit of the mākete whereby every endeavour is made to promote individual creativity and avoid duplication of others’ art and craft products.
  • Abide by The Arts Centre’s smoking policy. In particular, Stallholders agree to not smoke within the mākete area, within any of The Arts Centre buildings, or within 5 metres of any building.

LICENSOR’S REPRESENTATIONS

The Arts Centre reserves the right to undertake the following actions without notice:

  • Relocate a Stallholder to another stall in the mākete.
  • Require s Stallholder to remove from sale any good(s) or service(s) that are not approved products or sexist, racist, homophobic, xenophobic or considered generally offensive by The Arts Centre management.
  • Request a Stallholder undertake any reasonable measure that in the opinion of mākete staff will improve the safety of the stall or raise the level of presentation of the stall and/or its products.

DUTY OF CARE

The Arts Centre site and almost all of its buildings are heritage listed. Stallholders are obliged to respect those heritage values and refrain from any action or inaction that might contribute to a reduction in value, or that might have a negative impact on the heritage fabric of the site.

Stallholders must:

  • Ensure their employees and sub-contractors adhere to the principles of Duty of Care for The Arts Centre buildings and site.
  • Report any damage to The Arts Centre as soon as practically possible after it occurs.
  • Not lean or attach anything to any of The Arts Centre buildings.
  • Not alter any structure, fittings, decorations or furnishings of the venue, nor permit nails, hooks, adhesive fasteners, sticky tape, staples, masking tape, tacks (such as Blu Tack) or screws to be installed on any part of the venue, particularly heritage fabric such as stonework, wooden panelling or blue stone tiles.
  • Leave areas in as good a condition as they were when they arrived.
  • Not allow the use of substances that may have a detrimental effect on the heritage values of the site and/or present a health and safety risk and/or are strictly restricted (for example, materials that are corrosive, flammable, toxic, or explosive). 

HEALTH & SAFETY

Stallholders must:

  • Be aware of their obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.
  • Familiarise themselves with the venue’s emergency procedures.
  • Keep all exits clear. Egress paths must be at least 1.1 metres wide.
  • Read the Health and Safety sheet given at the first mākete attended.

LIABILITY

  • Under no circumstances will The Arts Centre make good or accept responsibility or liability in respect of any loss, theft or damage caused or sustained in any way to the venue or any of Stallholders’ property, goods, articles or things whatsoever placed, deposited, brought into or left at The Arts Centre for the Stallholders’ use or purpose by another person, or left or deposited with any officer or servant of The Arts Centre. Stallholders must indemnify and hold The Arts Centre and officers and servants of harmless in respect thereof.
  • The Arts Centre will not be liable for any loss due to any breakdown of machinery, failure of supply of electricity, leakage of water, fire, government restriction, act of God or any event that may cause the facilities to be temporarily closed or the mākete be interrupted or cancelled.
