This educational programme which is part of OPEN Christchurch 2021 is ideally suited for young people aged 8-12 years old who are interested in architecture.
The Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora formerly known as Canterbury College, has always been a place of history, architecture, creativity, and learning. Our new architecture programme explores the Neo-Gothic style at The Arts Centre and compares it with other architectural design.
In this programme, students will be able to go behind the fences and see what the stonemasons create in their workspace - where most of the intricately carved stonework that graces The Arts Centre’s walls is created. Students will be able to talk to expert stonemasons about stonemasonry, one of the oldest professions and art forms in human history.
Students will learn what makes a building Neo-Gothic and embark upon a scavenger hunt to locate these unique design features. They will come away with a better understanding of architectural features and their own take home hands-on activity. They will also learn about key individuals that are historically linked with The Arts Centre and its buildings.
