Maths Craft Day 2021

Sunday 23 May 2021

Time

10.00AM – 5.00PM

Venue: Great Hall

Discover the maths behind craft and the craft behind maths at the Christchurch Maths Craft Day.

Featuring a collection of craft creation stations as well as public talks by mathematicians and crafters, this celebration of maths promises to engage people of all ages. Knit a mathematical knot, crochet a Möbius strip, fold an origami octahedron, draw an impossible triangle, colour a Latin square, or listen to guest speakers talk about the fascinating relationships between maths and craft. Enthusiastic volunteers, experienced in both mathematics and crafts, will make you feel at home no matter what your age or background.

Open to everyone: experts and amateurs, maths-fans and maths-phobes, the crafty and the curious. No booking is required and entry is free. Follow along on Facebook and share it with your friends, family, and colleagues so they can come along and enjoy the day too!

Public Talks

Come listen to the guest speakers give fascinating talks about the relationships between maths and craft. There will be three public talks throughout the day:

  • 11am, Jeanette McLeod: Four Colours are Enough

  • 1pm, Michael Langton: Zigzags, Fractals, and Pleating

  • 3pm, Bernd Krauskopf and Hinke Osinga: Chaos in Crochet and Steel
