Hailed by The Press as 'A company to watch', Ōtautahi's own Toi Toi Opera is fast establishing a reputation as Aotearoa's most exciting and innovative pint-sized opera company.
Headlined by soprano Sarah-Jane Rennie and tenor Andrew Grenon, Toi Toi Opera's singers will take you on an immersive journey through some of opera's best-known and best-loved highlights.
Toi Toi Opera was born from a desire to give back something beautiful to the city we love, Ōtautahi Christchurch - a city that has suffered more than its fair share of sorrow in recent years, and which needs as many of its artists to shine as much restorative light as they possibly can as the city continues to rebuild.
Toi Toi is dedicated to presenting staged opera to celebrate and grow the talent of local opera singers, musicians, and associated creative and technical teams, and to make opera more accessible to our community.
The company presented its inaugural production 'Suor Angelica' by Puccini and 'Elegies' in the Great Hall at Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre in February 2021. They followed this up in August this year with 'A Barber and Bernstein Double Bill'. This featured Bernstein's sparkling 'Trouble in Tahiti' and Barber's witty 'A Hand of Bridge' and his poignant 'Knoxville: Summer of 1915'.
