Artists' Studios
Engineering, Worcester Boulevard
Five new artists' studios are being created to bring back the live creation of art.
Before the earthquake, artists’ studios were a huge draw-card at Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre, where you could enjoy watching a silversmith, painter or a woodcarver create something wonderful before your eyes.
A suite of five artists’ studios is currently being constructed on the ground floor of the Engineering Extension building to bring live creation back to The Arts Centre.
Opening early 2025
These studios will be home to working artists and open to the public to walk through, interact with the artists and watch the creative process in action.
There will be a kaupapa of sharing, with artists having access to the other art organisations or spaces onsite, such as The Physics Room, Scape Public Art, the Central Art Gallery, Pūmanawa Community Gallery and the University of Canterbury.
Affordable spaces for artists in Ōtautahi
Having a dedicated space will enable artists to practice and develop their craft, as well as giving them a place to both interact with visitors and directly sell their art to visitors.
There is currently a dearth of affordable artist studios in central Christchurch, as the earthquakes destroyed many artist workspaces in the central city.
Thank you to our funders and supporters
