This mural depicts Iranian activist Mahsa Amini, who died in police custody after being detained for not wearing a hijab (which is mandatory in Iran).
The mural features the words Woman Life Freedom on either side of Amini’s portrait, while poppies (a symbol of martyrdom) populate the background.
Kophie was born in Wānaka of Dutch-Samoan heritage, and now lives in Ōtautahi Christchurch. She has a Bachelor of Visual Communication, Bachelor of Media Arts (Honours, First Class) and a Diploma in Small Business and Project Management.
Along with her street art and freelance illustration practice, Kophie runs a sustainable streetwear label Future Apparel that critiques fast fashion. In March 2022, Kophie told Christchurch NZ, “Graffiti is an expression of self and building the street art culture actively promotes alternative narratives, diversity in representation and leaves a real legacy on our place.”
